Life throws us curve balls periodically and I’ve had my share of mine.

So, we adjust, right?

There’s a lot of coaching out there telling us to set big goals and dreams. That’s all good until these feel mentally insurmountable. That’s what I was starting to feel with the book I was writing.

Why not take a step back from the “big, hairy audacious” goal once in a while and just accomplish something small?

Ironically, more progress takes place because the tiny goals are easy to reach. And, if one is reached, why not another?

Right now I don’t have my big thought provoking book finished, but I do have three smaller eBooks in progress that will go live on Amazon in a few weeks.

That’s progress!

It’s that holiday time of year when everyone creates abnormally long “To Do” lists right when the flurry of shopping and events actually makes it more difficult to accomplish even the basics.

Keep moving forward on your dreams. But, break it down.

Tiny goals. Tiny successes.

I Shipped! – in draft form though it may be

Yep, the first draft of my book shipped to the first two reviewers. Pile of BooksAnd by “shipped” I mean emailed AND actually mailed hard copy. Woot!

It is junky. I’m embarrassed. But, it is out of my hands.

You know what the best part about it is?

I’m having some great ideas right now!

It’s a great reminder to get your product in the hands of someone else before truly creating the final product. Sure, they will have a lot of feedback for you, but something happens in your own brain as well. It gets freed up and remembers the intent and purpose behind what you were trying to create. It creates an entirely new set of ideas to make the draft better.

Scary though it may be, and a bit humbling, it will be worth it.

Does it really take 21 days to form a new habit?

Habit forming stems more from motivation than a number of days, right?

Most of us have habits that we are trying to break or healthier ones that we are trying to establish. It’s led me to think about this ‘habit thing’ and how long it might take for an action to become part of one’s daily routine. Ok, so im not new to the practice of meditation but I am at a point where I am wanting to commit to a daily meditation practice.

The established wisdom of ’21 days’ to embed a habit is nowadays open to question (read the huffington post article sharing research on this by James Clear) and it’s clear from research that it may take a while longer; somewhere between two and eight months. One reassuring  aspect of the research is that missing the odd opportunity to undertake a new habit doesn’t affect the habit forming process. This is reassuring news.
